Magnet School List

Magnet schools are one of the options into which students may choose to enroll. Transportation is provided according to district guidelines except where noted. Each magnet school manages its own application process. Ask for an application from the magnet school that interests you.

The deadline for all 2007-2008 middle and high school magnet applications is Friday, December 15, 2006.

The deadline for all 2007-2008 elementary school magnet applications is Wednesday, February 28, 2007.

Below is a description of all magnet programs in DPS.

Academia Ana Marie Sandoval De Lenguaje Dual Montessori (3 yrs-Grade 5)

Academia Sandoval is a Dual Language (English/Spanish) Montessori magnet school with students from Smedley, Columbian, Valdez and Bryant-Webster attendance areas receiving first priority for enrollment. In 2006-2007, students three years old through fifth grade will be served. Forty-five percent are native Spanish speakers; fifty-five are native English speakers. In addition to Montessori, all students learn a second language.

American Indian Focus Schools (K-12)

Focus schools centralize the enrollment of American Indian students to enhance their learning by providing educational, cultural and social support services. American Indian courses are offered for credit at East High School. Students can enroll in one of three elementary schools - Brown, College View or Wyman. Merrill Middle School, East High School and the CEC Middle College of Denver serve students at the secondary level.

Bryant-Webster started Colorado's first dual language ECE-8 program in fall 2005. In fall 2006, Spanish and English will be taught to students in Early Childhood Education through first grade. One grade will be added each consecutive year. Bryant-Webster provides a stimulating, challenging environment with high expectations producing successful students who are bilingual, biliterate, bicultural and who are personally, academically and technologically prepared for the 21st century.

This premier career and technical school allows high school students to earn credits toward a college associate's degree while taking courses at Community College of Denver. The middle college program is an intensive full-day program offering technology-based academic coursework and career studies. Students learn from experienced industry professionals as they prepare for the growing demands of the 21st century workplace or the college setting.

The program prepares leaders for a changing world and to use technology as a tool to navigate these changes. As the largest information technology program in the nation (400 students), the magnet offers state-of-the-art training in leadership, technology and entrepreneurialism. The curriculum is ranked among the best in the nation (National Academy Foundation review). The program boasts high graduation rates (92 percent) and college acceptance rates (90 percent).

This exciting new magnet school prepares students for college through a rigorous academic program with a strong international focus. Students learn a second or third language and may participate in international travel experiences. DSA students develop their creative abilities through a challenging arts curriculum that includes the opportunity to be mentored by professional artists and scholars. The Denver Baccalaureate program provides rigorous academics for students at or above grade level. Qualified students focus on developing their creative and critical thinking abilities in all academic areas. Students also participate in art, vocal music, instrumental music and physical education classes. The Core Knowledge curriculum provides enhanced learning experiences for students. Placement in the program provides transportation to and from the student's home school.

The comprehensive IB program serves motivated students who are seeking an academic challenge. Students follow an international curriculum, pursue extensive research, writing and participate in community service. The IB program emphasizes the importance of the learning process. Students apply for admission while in eighth grade. The program at GW accepts students into ninth and tenth grades (with specific admission criteria).

This is a rigorous academic program emphasizing knowledge, skills, experience, critical thinking and active responsible citizenship. The program integrates International Baccalaureate Organization principles with national, state and district standards. Students take five core subjects-language arts, a foreign language, humanities, science and mathematics-supplemented by electives. Students with a 75th-percentile or better on the ITBS or Proficient/advanced on the CSAP may apply.

The Montessori program makes the most of the innate desire of children to learn in a self-directed way. Students are provided with hands-on materials that enable them to learn while developing intellectual curiosity, self-respect and respect for the world. Hamilton builds on a Montessori elementary school foundation. The curriculum offers multiage classrooms. Public and private Montessori students may apply.

Knight's emphasis is focused on the back-to-basics fundamental approach, a disciplined learning environment, and required, active parental involvement. Students are expected to perform at or above grade level. Daily homework assignments help improve study skills, and mandatory uniforms help students focus on the building blocks of education - reading, mathematics, research skills, grammar and composition. High expectations from the beginning are set for students and parents.

The Lincoln Elementary School Montessori program has primary classes (ages 3, 4 and 5) and lower elementary classes (ages 6, 7 and 8). The primary Montessori is tuition based. The Montessori program will continue to add classes until the program serves students through sixth grade. The traditional school program serves kindergarten through fifth grade. Both programs are excellent and have highly-qualified teachers.

The International Preparatory Magnet Program at Smiley is a rigorous academic program emphasizing knowledge, skills, experience and critical thinking along with active and responsible citizenship. The IPM at Smiley Middle School includes sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students on three academic core teams, each with five teachers teaching in their areas of expertise.

Traylor Academy provides a kindergarten through fifth-grade fundamental curriculum that includes reading, grammar, writing, mathematics, technology and research skills taught within a disciplined learning environment. Transportation is provided for Denver students who live west of Broadway. Students in first through fifth grades also receive instruction in physical education, vocal music, library skills and visual arts. Daily homework and active parent participation help boost student enthusiasm and achievement.
